Vacant land including the site of the former Krug industrial building could be making way for a ‘residential neighbourhood’ in Stratford that may include hundreds of much-needed residences.
A management report prepared for Stratford City Council notes an application for a zone change in the Trinity Street and King Street area, just off Douro Street.
Plans include building 11 residential buildings. The proposal requests a maximum height increase to 36 metres, to include a 10-storey apartment building.
The applicant is proposing to develop 382 dwelling units, including a combination studio, one-to-three bedroom apartments, and townhouses, per the report.
The proposal includes adaptive re-use of the existing vacant building to conserve the heritage attributes of the property and neighbourhood.
The report was set to be addressed at city council meeting on Tuesday but the meeting was postponed (A big agenda and a big crowd but city council meeting postponed – My Stratford Now).
Stratford Mayor Martin Ritsma told MyStratfordNow that the project is at the information delivery stage, where council, staff and residents are learning more about the ins and outs, and proposals for the project.
A public meeting about the project is part of that process and there are some concerns about the height of the development and added traffic.
With a need for housing, and keeping in mind that all growth can’t be on the outskirts of municipalities, Ritsma said building within the city is a good option.
“It’s what Stratford needs.”
