Transportation is the topic for next ‘Climate Conversations’

Global temperatures in 2023 were higher than ever before, meaning conversations about climate change are of critical importance.

Climate Momentum, a community-based climate action group in Stratford and Perth County, works to encourage both talk and action.

On Oct. 24, the organization will be holding its October Climate Conversation surrounding the topic of transportation, one of the largest emitters of pollution.

Climate Conversations are short presentations followed by engaging conversations surrounding a set topic. Participants are encouraged to bring their thoughts and questions to share with other community members.

Sheila Clarke, an organizer of Climate Conversations and member of Climate Momentum, spoke with MyStratfordNow to discuss the series came to be.

The climate conversation series which began in September, came from a organizational collective realization that all of the efforts people have made individually are having a limited impact. The group prepared for 40 people, and ended up over 60 people having impactful conversations at its September Climate Conversation.

“The conversations are not answers. They are catalysts or sparks to encourage the dialogue and encourage solutions,” expressed Clarke.

Climate Momentum’s vision is for a community engaged in creative and bold responses to the global climate crisis. They are also committed to a carbon-neutral Perth County by the year 2040.

The all-volunteer organization focuses on supporting individuals and advocating for community-wide change in key areas of meaningful climate action.

“It really is a community effort. It’s not just one organization or one voice and certainly the number of voices that we heard at that first evening was just incredible,” said Clarke.

The October conversation will take place at the Stratford City Hall Auditorium at 7 p.m.
