‘Coyotes are here’, County launches new page and reporting form

Perth County recently launched a coyote information and reporting form webpage to educate the public and gather data about the animals’ presence in the area.

The new initiative is a direct response to concerns raised from residents about coyotes and the rising potential for human-coyote interactions.

Sarah Franklin, Communications Officer for Perth County, explained that county council previously discussed this issue and the concern coyotes can pose to rural communities.

“I would stress to folks living in Perth county that coyotes are here, they can be on people’s properties, but they are usually very wary and fearful of humans,” said Franklin.

The new webpage contains helpful information in regards to the predators, such as tips to decrease potential interactions and tactics to coyote-proof properties.

There is also a coyote sighting reporting form on the page. Members of the public can use the form to self-report any coyote sightings or interactions they experience within the county.

Franklin reminds people to be diligent should they encounter a coyote.

“Obviously if the coyote is posing an immediate threat, certainly the public should call 911 immediately, but if you encounter a coyote, you should never approach it, remain calm, stay back from the coyote,” stated Franklin.
