United Way Perth-Huron has announced a new living wage of $23.05.
A living wage is calculated to show how much a worker must earn per hour to make ends meet where they live.
This is a slight increase from last year’s wage of $22.75.
Ryan Erb, United Way Perth Huron Executive Director, explained, during Living Wage Week, that making communities more livable is an important, ongoing local effort.
He also notes that $10 a day childcare is helping slow pressure on wages, yet food and housing costs continue to be major economic stressors.
He continued by explaining that wages must reflect the needs of workers and that the United Way is committed to continuing this important conversation with employers.
There are 37 certified employers in Perth and Huron counties that pay at least a living wage.
