Perth East resident loses $320,000 in ‘security breach’ fraud

A local resident has lost a considerable amount of money after a ‘security breach’ fraud.

Perth OPP said a Perth East resident received a notification on their computer about  a security breach of their personal information.

Last November, the resident noticed a pop up on the screen and was directed to call a number about a security breach.

The person on the other end claimed to work for Microsoft, and remote access was granted to the victim’s computer.

The victim was told that their finances had been compromised.

The victim was directed to withdraw cash from their financial institution, totaling $80,000, and to purchase more $240,000 worth of 100 gram gold bars from an online company.

The gold was delivered to the victim’s house by a delivery company, and on five separate occasions over two weeks, unknown people attended the residence to pick up the cash and gold.

Persons of interest are described as Asian males, ages 25-35, with short, dark hair and short in stature. Vehicles used include a white Lexus sedan and dark-coloured small sedans.

The investigation is ongoing. Police remind residents to be vigilant to to stay alert and educated to reduce the risk of being a victim of fraud.
