Excessive speed and alcohol impairment remain two of the main causes behind snowmobile fatalities in our province.
Ontario Snowmobile Safety Week runs Monday until Feb. 17 and OPP are reminding snowmobilers that making each ride risk-free gives them their best chance of safely making it through the season.
Over the past 10 snowmobile seasons, 145 snowmobilers lost their lives in OPP jurisdictions with driving too fast for the conditions and being impaired two of the leading causes.
Police say driver inattention and a lack of helmet use are among other factors that have cost snowmobilers their lives in the last decade.
With close to 40 per cent of the 145 fatalities taking place on frozen lakes and rivers, police say these locations account for the highest number of snowmobile deaths.
