Explore cultural identity, belonging, and resilience with an evocative film screening this Saturday in Stratford.
The Stratford Film Festival is showing Riceboy Sleeps, a Korean-Canadian drama set in 1990s suburban Vancouver.
Claire Bickley, a documentary producer and journalist representing the film festival, explained that the drama is relatable on many levels.Â
“It is very immersive, you get very, very engaged in it I think. It’s also very visually beautiful and the performances are amazing. It really does give you an idea of what it’s like to walk in someone else’s shoes.”
The bilingual movie has been screened worldwide and has received international acclaim.
The story is that of a Korean single mother determined to provide a brighter future for her young son by moving to Canada, where they navigate the successes and struggles of moving to a new country.
The film festival has also been selected to partner with the Toronto International Film Festival for its film circuit program.
Due to their association, the 20-year-old male lead from the movie, Ethan Hwang, will be at the event for post-screening interviews and audience Q&As.
The screenings will be at Stratford City Hall’s Auditorium at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.
