The Erie Street parking lot resurfacing project has begun.
The first phase, expected to take eight weeks to complete, includes the lower lot while the second, starting mid-May and ending mid-June, will include the upper lot.
Stratford Mayor Martin Ritsma said the parking lot has been a subject of discussion at city council for many years.
“It is a project that has been a long time coming,” he told MyStratfordNow.
According to a letter to residents and property owners from project manager Nick Sheldon, the project includes resurfacing, storm drainage replacement, and repairs to sidewalk, curbs and gutters.
The project is expected to cost about $500,000.
Ideas have been floated in the past about a stacked parking facility on Erie Street, and that could still be revisited one day, the mayor said, however, the city is also looking at the stacked parking option at the nearby Grand Trunk site.
Ritsma said the Erie lot is rundown and it needs to be addressed.
“It’s important to acknowledge the safety component for our residents and our visitors, alike.”
Parking is unavailable on the portion under construction, however, it remains available nearby at the Kalbfleisch lot, Cooper lot, and on-street along Erie Street and Downie Street.
