Conservative MP Nater wins again in Perth-Wellington

Conservative John Nater has secured his seat in the Perth-Wellington riding.

Nater was elected as the Member of Parliament in the federal election in 2015 and has been MP since, continuing now for his fourth term.

MyStratfordNow spoke with Nater after his win on Monday night, where he reminded residents of his dedication to his duty as MP.

“Obviously, it’s a great honour and privilege to be reelected as the member of parliament for Perth-Wellington. It’s something that I take seriously, and I look forward to serving the folks in every corner of Perth-Wellington in the years to come.”

Nater took 53.2 per cent of the vote, or 33,850 votes.*

Liberal David Mackey was second at 40.7 per cent, or 25,892 votes.*

The Liberal Party will form the federal government for a fourth term, as a minority government, with Mark Carney as Prime Minister.

Nater explained the need for breaking down federal trade barriers once parliament resumes, hoping to get that done before Canada Day.

He said it will be a “challenge” to have Bloc Québécois as the party mediator between the Liberals and Conservatives, as they have the third highest number of seats, beating out the NDP and Green parties.

But Nater hopes a minority government will encourage bridge building.

Now more than ever, Canadians are united and with the looming threats from the U.S., he said, Canadian pride is at an all-time high.
