Pettapiece not surprised to find out Ontario deficit larger than first reported

The MPP for Perth-Wellington says the Ontario Liberals should be ashamed of themselves.

Randy Pettapiece made the comment coming on the heels of the Auditor General announcing last week that the Ontario Liberals dramatically understated the provinces deficit by billions of dollars.

Bonnie Lysyk says the Liberals haven’t accurately reflected the true cost of its borrowing plan to cut hydro rates by 25 per cent and she also questioned just how the province accounts for revenues related to two teacher pension plans it includes on the books as assets, the miscalculations mean instead of a $6.7 billion dollars deficit in 2018-2019 Ontario actually has a $11.7 billion dollar shortfall.

Pettapiece says he also doesn’t buy Premier Kathleen Wynne blaming the news on an ongoing rift with Lysyk over accounting methods.

“She’s an independent officer of the legislator, it is her role to find these things and report back on the governments finances, to me the Liberals saying this is just a spat doesn’t hold water.”

Lysyk also says any party that leads the province after the election in June will face a shortfall of $5-billion.
