Community leadership lands youth a big scholarship

Evan Johnson has landed a big time scholarship.

The Stratford District Secondary School student leads a Jack.org chapter, which helps area youth address mental health.

He also wrote about book with colleagues and friends about grade school fears and how to alleviate them.

The 18-year-old linked hunger and mental health by creating a project to provide food to students, distributing take-home food kits through his Food for Thought group.

Johnson will receive up to $70,000 for tuition and other post-secondary school expenses thanks to his community leadership efforts.

Talkative by nature, Johnson told MyStratfordNow when he found out about the TD scholarship for community leadership, he was speechless.

“It is really just a big honour. It shows that there are people out there who care about other people who are doing the work that needs to be done to make society a better place.”

Johnson will study aeronautical engineering at Carleton University and he plans to try and restart the Jack.org chapter at the university when he arrives in Ottawa.

He has also found a few friends to keep the local chapter running in Stratford and area.
