It was the biggest turnout ever.
Rotary Hospice Stratford Perth’s 10th Annual Hike for Hospice set a participation record, and a dedicated group managed to raise more than $100,000.
Event co-chair Julie Docker Johnson told MyStratfordNow the turnout was amazing.
“We had over 280 hikers, which is the most, and it was registered hikers, so there would be more people that hiked than that were registered,” she said.
Johnson said Ministry of Health funding goes directly to nursing costs and does not cover all of the costs of the hospice, so they need to fundraise.
The personal commitment of Hospice staff was also evident, as they formed one of the major teams in the hike, she said.
“It says an awful lot when people who work somewhere participate and raise money to keep their building going,” Johnson added.
The event fosters a strong sense of community and support, she said.
Johnson said hikers usually have been impacted by the Hospice, so they truly understand what it is.
