Human trafficking information session in Mitchell Tuesday night

A human trafficking community presentation will be hosted by Perth OPP and the Avon Maitland District School Board tomorrow (Oct. 29).

It’s a free event from 6 to 8 p.m. at Mitchell District High School.

Booths from local service groups will include Victim Services Huron Perth, Perth Mobile Crisis Response Team, Optimism Place, Stop Violence Against Women, Children’s Aid Society and the Huron Perth Centre.

Const. Jill Johnson, a Community Mobilization Officer and Mental Health Liaison said youth are becoming more vulnerable to online predators through the prevalence of social media and online gaming.

And this isn’t just a “big city problem”.

It’s happening in rural communities as well.

“A lot of people don’t really realize that it is happening here,” said Johnson.

A featured speaker is Melanie Knight, Executive Director of Bridging Gaps Anti-Human Trafficking.

Knight has lived experience being trafficked.

Det. Sgt. Ashley Horton, with the OPP Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, will also speak from a policing perspective.

A Q&A will follow the presentation.
