Two local artists juxtaposed in Gallery Stratford

Gallery Stratford has recently launched two new exhibits spotlighting local talent.

The exhibits, which launched at the end of October, highlight the work of two local painters in a unique juxtaposition – one relatively young painter beginning his career, the other a well established mature artist.

Robert Windrum, Interim Director and Curator for Gallery Stratford, explained that the exhibits have been well received so far.

“The response has been that everybody loves the two of them together. The contrast in style, in age, in approach, in career, really it makes for a dynamic viewing experience,” said Windrum.

One of the artists, Henry Bukenya’s “Portraits” will be on display at the gallery until the end of December.

Bukenya is a young painter from Uganda, who has relocated to Stratford. The 23 year-old Ugandan refugee’s portraits reflect his world views as well as his rich cultural history.

The upper gallery spotlights artist James MacDougall, and his portrait series titled “Sharing Others’ Lives”. It will be on display until the beginning of December.

MacDougall is an 88-year-old retired medical doctor, but a painter all his life. His portraits offer an accomplished mature style, honed by decades of practice.

MacDougall is also at the exhibition from 2:30-4:30 p.m on the days the gallery is open, to discuss his work and connect with viewers.

Windrum expressed that the artistic talent in Stratford and area is rich and diverse.

“I’ve never really had to go very far to find amazing visual art and bring that experience to the Stratford community.”
