Past Stratford union president says postal strike more heartbreaking every day

The reality of being on strike gets more heartbreaking every day.

That’s the honest perspective provided by Patti-Jo Lindner, past Canadian Union of Postal Workers president and current labour council president for Stratford District and area.

Lindner said with the national strike in its third week, everyone is starting to feel the pressure.

“Those people that are out there on the line are starting to feel the stress and the struggle.”

Lindner says workers want healthier, safer workplaces with better working conditions. They also want a livable wage and pensions, six-day-a-week delivery and more full-time work opportunities for part-time and casual employees.

Other unions including teachers, nurses and LCBO get good deals or negotiated agreements and postal workers want the same, she said.

Lindner is hopeful the union and Canada Post can soon reach a mutually beneficial agreement.

“We have to come to some common ground, we have to. For the livelihood of Canada post and the union.”

Reached for comment by MyStratfordNow, Canada Post say they are waiting to hear back on their current proposal, which includes proposals to bring greater flexibility to the corporation’s delivery model and demonstrates movement on other key issues.

Canada Post hope to return to the table “soon” so discussions can be reignited and work towards a final agreement can continue.
