Ottawa jumps into the fray of Canada Post strike

Ottawa is getting involved in the Canada Post strike – now into its 29th day.

Federal Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon says the two sides are at an impasse and he’s applying a solution.

MacKinnon says an industrial inquiry commission will be formed and will dig into the structural issues preventing the labour dispute from being resolved.

He says if the board agrees the two sides are at an impasse, it has been asked to order union members to return to work.

MacKinnon says people have suffered throughout the country because of the strike.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers says approximately 55,000 workers in its urban, rural and suburban mail carrier bargaining units are striking.

Mail and parcels are not being processed or delivered during the nationwide strike and some post offices will be closed.

Canada Post has warned that Canadians will face delays in receiving their mail.

Additionally, postage within the system will not be delivered. They also stated that disrupted postage will be delivered on a first-in, first-out basis once operations resume, but that the impact of the strike will be felt even after it ends.
