Governor General Mary Simon has named 88 new appointments to the Order of Canada, including Diane Sims of Stratford.
Sims was appointed as one of 63 members, along with one companion and 24 officers.
The Order of Canada is one of our country’s highest honours, recognizing people across all sectors of society who have made extraordinary and sustained contributions to Canada.
“It was extremely exciting, very delightful and overwhelmingly humbling,” Sims told MyStratfordNow.
The Governor General’s office describes Sims as a celebrated writer and accessibility advocate. Her publications include the internationally distributed An Ovarian Cancer Companion, and candid writings about her lifelong perseverance through medical hardships and her personal journey with medical assistance in dying.
Sims is also a long-time volunteer with organizations focused on multiple sclerosis and ovarian cancer. Sims is a member of the City of Stratford’s accessibility advisory committee.
Ruth Abernethy, a sculptor with a studio in Wellesley, was also appointed as a member.
Abernethy, who worked at the Stratford Festival early in her career, has contributed to Canada’s cultural landscape for decades, according to The Governor General’s office.
“This internationally renowned sculptor has created iconic life-size bronze pieces showcased across the world. By exploring the themes of gender roles, heritage crafts and nation building, she has changed the way visitors interact with the great Canadians that have shaped our country’s history.”
