St. Michael wins provincial high school girl’s hockey title

Plenty of things need to happen to win a provincial hockey tournament.

Thankfully for the St. Michael Catholic Secondary School girl’s hockey team, the stars aligned over a half dozen games in Sudbury.

St. Michael won the Ontario A/AA championship with an undefeated run, capped by a big win in the championship game.

It was the third OFSAA title for Warriors head coach Mark Flanagan.

“Six games in three days. Travel. Living in the suitcase. We had three lines that we just turned over. They just worked really hard.”

Victoria Campbell scored two goals for the Warriors in their convincing 6-0 win over St. Mark in the championship.

Campbell also had two goals in St. Michael’s 6-4 win over top ranked Holy Cross in the final four, a team that featured two Team Canada junior players.

Ainsley Berendsen and Jayda Houben also scored some important goals.

Sue Dunn and Mikayla Flanagan helped coach the team.

The Warriors were seeded fifth going into the 16-team provincial tournament.

“You got to get the luck of the draw. And the bounces as well. But we felt we were a contending team.”

Flanagan said a balanced roster combined with focus from the players to get the results.

“It’s so hard. We didn’t make it out of Huron-Perth (conference) last year. We had that in the back of our mind.”

With just six players graduating, Flanagan is hopeful next year’s team is just as competitive.
