Impactful documentary with local ties coming to Cineplex cinemas this May

It’s a locally produced documentary on Chinese Canadian history and it’s coming to theatres next month.

Exclusion: Beyond the SilenceĀ is a powerful film revealing the lasting impact of Canada’s Chinese Exclusion Act.Ā

Directed by Stratford Festival veteran Keira LoughranĀ and produced by Ballinran Entertainment in association with White Pine Pictures, the film follows Loughran and Helen Lee as they investigate the legacy of their grandmothers, who fought for the reunification of Chinese Canadian families and ultimately helped pave the way for Canada’s policy of multiculturalism.

Craig Thompson, President and Executive Producer of Ballinran Entertainment and a producer of the documentary, explains the importance of the national theatre release of this ground-breaking film.Ā

“We go into Asian Heritage month in May, to remember that the Chinese who make up a significant part of the Canadian population, had to go through a lot of struggle and sacrifice.”

It will be screening at up to 30 Cineplex locations across the country as part of Asian Heritage month on May 2, 3 and 7.

And Thompson hopes people can relate to the story being told.

“I think people will see their own lives and their own ancestry reflected up on screen.”

There are local screenings at the London and Waterloo Cineplex cinemas.

For tickets, visit Cineplex.com or Ballinran’s website.
