PDHU begins West Nile Virus surveillance

The Perth District Health Unit is reminding people to protect themselves from mosquitoes.

This comes as West Nile Virus surveillance begins.

West Nile is a disease that mosquitoes can give to humans through bites.

Most people will show mild or no symptoms if infected but those with weak immune systems or chronic diseases could see serious health effects.

The PDHU says infected mosquitoes have been found in Perth County over the last several years.

However there have been less than five human cases since 2010.

You can help protect yourself by clearing standing water on your property, keeping bushes and shrubs trimmed and wearing insect repellant with DEET or Icaridin.
