UTRCA looking to reduce phosphorous levels to fight algae

The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority is taking aim at phosphorous.

The federal government wants to see it reduced by 40% in the watershed.

That’s because of its connection to algae blooms in the Great Lakes.

Algae blooms can have negative and harmful effects on other forms of life in the water.

A group called the Thames River Clear Water Revival is looking at ways to cut back on the phosphorous.

The UTRCA says reducing the amount that reaches the river during the spring runoff is the key.
